Mary Anne Moate

 Mary Anne Moate 1931 - 2008

Mary Moate was born Mary Anne Henry in 1931, she was the eldest of 9 children.  She grew up on a small farm in Cloonacool near Tubbercurry in Sligo Southern Ireland.  At the tender age of 18 she moved to the UK to study nursing in London, she started with her SRN at Whipps Cross Hospital and then her midwifery at Connaught Hospital.

 

She met Arthur Moate and married him in 1957.  They moved to Stevenage to begin their life together.  They moved to Alconbury in 1970 when she started working at the Charles Hicks Doctor Surgery as a midwife.  She continued there until her retirement in 1992.

 

She was the mother of 5 (Stephen, Anne, David, Carol & Andrew), grandmother of 10, (Donna, Kerry, Max, Matthew, Michael, Chris, Adam, Ryan, Jack and Harry) and great grandmother to Charlie. 

She will be remembered for her gentle and caring nature.  She was always delighted to meet friends and patients alike.  During her career she cared for many generations of mothers, providing support and advice during the special time of pregnancy, birth and the early days with a new baby.

She was 77 years old when she passed away on 18th July 2008 having suffering a stroke.

She is sadly missed.
