A Tribute to Darren Marsh, a home loving man.
1989 - 2009
Godmanchester lost a very much loved young man last year when Darren Marsh died on September 6th 2009 at the age of twenty. He was very popular with all the community, young and not so young, whom he respected always.
Darren really enjoyed football and especially cricket. Encouraged by his dad, Mick, as a little boy he would play football in his nana Foster's garden as well as cricket with his sister Monique and his three cousins, all girls - Hannah, Lauren and Natasha Foster. As he grew up he supported Godmanchester Rovers FC, but his passion was cricket. He played for the local team, but eventually he played for Longstowe almost every Saturday and Sunday and really enjoyed it. Mick also played and mum, Yvonne, often watched but always ensured a clean kit was available.
Darren attended Godmanchester primary school, then Hinchinbrooke, followed by a short spell at Huntingdon Regional College. Unemployed for a while he finally found a job at a small works in Fenstanton called "Inside to Outside" where he was a popular employee. He learnt to drive and bought himself a car. He supported Manchester United Football club, and nearer to home he was a Cambridge United season ticket holder attending matches with his dad Mick.
Darren was a member of the Comrades club and enjoyed a game of darts. He had 3 very good friends, John, Mark and Tom who would go clubbing together and never caused any trouble. In his last game of cricket in the final game of the season at Longstowe Darren injured his foot: he won quite a few trophies that year which his dad had to pick up, Darren never did see them. This injury caused a blood clot from which he died.
